Land Pollution in Ibadan Essay Example
Land Pollution in Ibadan Paper Human activities are the main factor and their misuse of land resources. Arbitration and industrialization are major causes of land pollution. Indiscriminate disposal of domestic (solid and liquid) and industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals, and improper use of soil by inadequate agricultural practices are a few factors. Taking Abidjan as a case study, we are going to discuss the causes of land pollution in Abidjan, the effects, the remedial measures and how effective they are. Abidjan was historically an Gab town. The Gab occupants were forced to leave the town and moved to present-day Absolute under the leadership of Stocked when the surge of Oho refugees flocked into the towns as an aftermath of the fall of Oho Kingdom. Abidjan grew into an impressive and sprawling urban center so much that by the end of 1 829, Abidjan dominated the Your;b; region militarily, politically and economically. The military sanctuary expanded even further when refugees began arriving in large numbers from northern Oho following raids by Flank warriors. After losing the northern portion of their region to the marauding Fulfils, many Oho indigene retreated deeper into the Abidjan environs. The Flank Caliphate attempted to expand further into the southern region of modern-day Nigeria, UT was decisively defeated by the armies of Abidjan in 1840. The Abidjan area became a British Protectorate in 1 893 and by then the population had swelled to 120,000. The British developed the new colony to facilitate their commercial activities in the area, and Abidjan shortly grew into the major trading center that it is today. It is located in south-western, 128 km inland northeast of Lagos and 345 km southwest of , the federal capital and is a prominent point between the region and the areas to the north. The population of Abidjan was 2,550,593 according to 2006 census results, including 1 1 local government areas. The principal inhabitants of the city are the Yours. Waste also includes garbage, construction debris, commercial refuse, sludge from water, control facilities and other discarded materials. Most of the solid wastes, like paper, plastic containers, bottles, cans, and even used cars and electronic goods are not bio-degradable, which means they do not get broken down through inorganic or organic processes. Thus, when they accumulate they pose a health threat to people. Decaying wastes also attract household pests and result in urban areas becoming unhealthy, dirty, and unsightly places to reside in. Moreover, it also causes damage to terrestrial organisms, while also reducing the uses of the land for other, more useful purposes. Some of the sources of solid, liquid and gaseous waste that cause land pollution are: *Wastes from Agriculture: This comprises of waste matter produced by crop, animal manure, and farm residues. *Wastes from Mining: Piles of coal refuse and heaps of slam. *Wastes from Industries: Industrial waste matter that can cause land pollution can include paints, chemicals, and so on. Solids from Sewage Treatment: Wastes that re left over after sewage has been treated, biomass sludge, and settled solids. *Ashes: The residual matter that remains after solid fuels are burned. *Garbage: This comprises of waste matter from food that are decomposable and other waste matter that are not decomposable such as glass, metal, cloth, plastic, wood, paper, and so on. WASTE GENERATION IN ABIDJAN Solid waste Although it is generally agreed that enormous quantities of solid waste are generated in Abidjan daily, the exact figures have not been determined, probably owing to the use of diverse methods of calculation. Mackerel International Ltd (1970) found that the average per capita quantity of solid waste generated was 0. 37-0. 5 keg/day for the traditional areas of the city and 0. 53 keg/day for the newer areas. According to Juniors (1986), 38 million keg of solid waste was collected in the suburbs of Abidjan in 1986. The suburbs constitute about 21% of the city. On this basis, it can be estimated that 181 million keg of solid waste was generated in the city as a whole in 1986. This gives a per capita waste-generation rate of 0. 31 keg/day, using the 1986 estimated population of 1. Million for the city. In 1982, PA Associates corded the volume and weight of solid Waste generated per household per day in Abidjan. The study revealed that waste generation varied according to land use, with residential land use taking the bulk of the share. The generation rates were 3. 4 keg/household per day in the traditional areas, 3. 2 keg/household per day in the newer areas, and 3. 3 keg/household per day in the whole city (altogether giving a per capita generation rate of 0. 33 keg/day). Several researchers have studied the volume of refuse generated in the city. For example, Mackerel International Ltd (1970) estimated this volume at 182 00 t. The latest study, conducted by Hastening and Seasoned Associates (1994), estimated the per capita rate at 0. 6 keg/day, with a density of 300 keg/ mm. The projections are based on an annual growth rate of population per year The solid-waste composition in Abidjan comprises leaves, paper, food waste, tins, glass, and rags (Mackerel International Ltd 1970). This is because Abidjan is located in the heart of a rich agricultural land and has a large old and unplanned section.

Cadbury Swot Analysis Essays
Cadbury Swot Analysis Essays Cadbury Swot Analysis Paper Cadbury Swot Analysis Paper SWOT Analysis Strengths The Companyââ¬â¢s Long History. Cadbury Schweppes is one of the biggest beverage and confectionery companies in the world. With a history stretching back over 200 years, today their products are enjoyed in almost every country around the world. Cadbury Schweppes plc was formed by our merger of these two great British household names in 1969. Since then they have expanded the business throughout the world by a program of organic and acquisition led growth. It was in 1783 that Jacob Schweppe perfected his process for manufacturing carbonated mineral water in Geneva, Switzerland. John Cadbury opened in Birmingham in the UK in 1824. Originally selling tea and coffee, it was, however, his marginal lines of cocoa and chocolate that, in just a few years, took over as the mainstay of the business and started the Cadbury success story. Cadbury Schweppes took the strategic decision in the mid 1980s to concentrate on our core international brands of beverages and confectionery and exit the general foods and hygiene sector with the sale of non-core brands such as Typhoo Tea, Kenco Coffee and Jeyes. Since then, we have strengthened our portfolio of key brands through the purchase of Motts (1982), Canada Dry (1986), Trebor (1989), Bassett (1989), Dr Pepper and 7 UP (1995) and Hawaiian Punch (1999). The new millennium has seen us continue to make acquisitions concentrating our interests in North America, Europe and the Asian Pacific regions. Snapple and Hollywood were acquired in 2000, and in 2001 we became number two in the soft drinks market in France with the acquisition of Orangina. In 2002 Cadbury Schweppes catapulted to joint number one position worldwide in confectionery and number two worldwide in chewing gum, first by buying Dandy, the Danish chewing gum company and, at the end of the year, announcing our proposed $4. 2 billion acquisition of Adams. The American Customer Satisfaction Index report rates Cadbury Schweppes as number 1 on the beverages market. This yet again presents their excellence in the beverage industry from a different angle and from a different source. Acquisition of Dr. Pepper/ Seven Up Bottling group and distribution channels. On May 2, 2006, Cadbury Schweppes completed the acquisition of The Carlyle Groups 53% stake in Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group forming the Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group. The Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group (formerly Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group, Inc. ) is the largest independent manufacturer, marketer and distributor of well-known and widely-consumed carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks in the United States. They service more than one-third of the U. S. population with operations in 25 states. They operate ten manufacturing plants, over 100 distribution centers and employ over 9,000 employees. The Companyââ¬â¢s portfolio of carbonated soft drinks (CSD) and alternative beverages consist of highly recognizable national brands that are in many cases the first or second ranking brand in their flavor or product category. Dr Pepper, Seven Up, AW, Sunkist, Canada Dry, Schweppes and Squirt are a few of the leading CSD brands. The leading alternative beverages manufactured and/or distributed by the Company are: Snapple, Fiji, Arizona, Clearly Canadian, Glaceau and Deja Blue water. Also, the acquisition of SeaBevs, and independent bottler, strengthened the Companyââ¬â¢s route to markets in the South-East of the US. The Companyââ¬â¢s strong and highly valued organization culture. Cadbury Schweppesââ¬â¢ success relies on their people. The Company has a strong heritage in the way it respects its people and its social responsibilities. Some key facts and figures: ?They employ over 50,000 people in over 60 countries. ?Currently women constitute 33% of the global workforce, 33% of out managers and 13% of our executive management team. Global staff turn-over is generally low, between 2% and 5% per year. Their people practices are guided by our key values, which are to be open and honest, to act with complete integrity and to provide quality in products and services. We value diversity and value employees from varied backgrounds as they enrich our culture and support our commercial success. Our diversity practice helps us to attract the best people to Cadbury Schweppes and allows us to reflect the diversity of the world around us better our consumer base and the communities in which we operate. We aim to reflect diversity in both our workforce and in our leadership teams. Through a culture of inclusiveness, we also aim to inspire the best in our people, earn their trust, increase their engagement and promote pride in our company. Responsible business is underpinned by strong values and has a clear and compelling vision of where it is going. Over many years Cadbury Schweppes has earned success on the strength of its distinctive values and clear vision. This update sets out the steps we are taking to ensure that in our present and future business, as in the past, we continue to live our values. Ultimately the Companyââ¬â¢s goals and those of their shareowners are similar; a responsible and well-run company that delivers consistently superior profits over the long-term. Performance driven, values led. Good business and strong values go hand in hand. For our long term future, and that of all our stakeholders, it is in our mutual interests that we create a world in which our business will grow and thrive. A wide portfolio of products and emphasis on innovation and creativity. Cadbury Schweppes brands become old friends with whom our consumers have special relationships. This makes the protection of their reputation an essential ingredient of our-long term success. Cadbury Schweppes is also constantly seeking new and innovative ways to satisfy the consumers willingness to try new things. Whenever they develop a new product they have to build consumer awareness through advertising and promotion. Consumers want to be informed, whether to be reminded of their feelings about established favorites or to be told of new delights available for their enjoyment. Their products fulfill a broad range of needs. They offer energy, taste, rewards and gift opportunities. Cadbury Schweppes caters for these fundamental needs in a range of products which offer a huge variety of ingredients and styles. Variety is important. In this business freedom of choice means not only the freedom to seek new combinations of old favorites, but also new experiences. With choice, comes access to our products. Cadbury Schweppes makes sure their products are as widely available as possible, to ensure that they are always within an arms reach whether as an impulse or a considered buy. To achieve this, they work with our customers in many different trade channels. How well they achieve the above determines how successful they will become in the market. Exiting markets and products where profitability is low. Cadbury Schweppes over their long history has had the tendency to focus more on the most productive and most profitable products and leave behind the ones that did not fit well with the Companyââ¬â¢s expectation. This has definitely served them well and has made them more consistent in the eyes of the customers as a Company that delivers only the best products. Even before the merger in 1969, John Cadburyââ¬â¢s business was tea, coffee, and cocoa, but it was the cocoa and chocolate that made him more successful and therefore that was the area that he focused and specialized in. Another example was in mid 1980s, the Company decided to exit the general foods and hygiene sector with the sale of non-core brands such as Typhoo Tea, Kenco Coffee and Jeyes. They diverted the attention in the direction of purchasing and developing more successful brands such as: Motts, Canada Dry, Dr Pepper, 7-UP, etc. Efficient supply management of raw materials. Cadbury Schweppes uses a wide range of raw materials in manufacturing our products, the main ones being cocoa beans, sugar and other sweeteners (including polyols and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame), dairy products (including milk), gum base and fruit and nuts. They buy the raw materials from about 40,000 suppliers around the world. No single supplier accounts for more than 10% of the raw material purchases. The quality of these materials underpins the quality of the Cadbury products and they work with suppliers to maintain this. Ingredients suppliers are asked to meet the Cadbury standards and achieve independent external accreditation. In addition Cadbury Schweppes considers the standards within our supply chain in terms of ethical trade (labor standards), sustainable agriculture and environmental management. They seek to minimize the impact of price fluctuations and ensure security of supply by entering into forward agreements and long-term contracts wherever available. In the case of cocoa, one of their main agricultural ingredients, they import cocoa beans from West Africa, primarily Ghana, and the Americas. West Africa accounts for over 60% of world production. The Company buys cocoa beans and cocoa butter from a range of suppliers, and try to minimize the effect of cocoa price movements and secure our future requirements by entering into forward and future contracts. They have developed the Cadbury Cocoa Partnership to support and develop the livelihoods of farmers who provide our cocoa beans, helping to support them and the Companyââ¬â¢s supply chain for the future. They are also developing sustainable agriculture strategies for other crops that are key to their ingredients supply such as sugar. Strong Financial backbone. Financial Highlights of 2007: ?Americas Beverage revenue grew 4% which is a really good performance in these challenging markets. ?Snapple Revenue grew 5% due to innovation. ?Underlying beverage margins impacted by the bottler acquisition and the launch costs of Accelerade sports drink. ?2007 overall revenue was ? 7,971 million, 7% increase from the precious year. ?Free Cash Flow was ? 527 million, compared to ? 472 in 2006.

Password Cracker Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Password Cracker - Research Paper Example All the possible combinations of characters are tested against the encrypted passwords that are obtained in the brute-force dialog, in most of the tools that use brute force technique. We can understand this as a thief cracking a locked cupboard and trying different combinations of numbers. The key space of all possible combinations of passwords is calculated using the following formula: KS = L^(m) + L^(m+1) + L^(m+2) + ........ + L^(M) Letââ¬â¢s say that we want to crack LanManager passwords (LM) using the character set "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ" of 26 letters. In this case, the brute-force cracker will try the above formula in this way: KS = 26^1 + 26^2 + 26^3 + ...... + 26^7 = 8353082582 8353082582 is the number of different keys that the brute force cracker tool will try. Now letââ¬â¢s suppose that we want to crack the same password but this time the character set is ââ¬Å"ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!@#$%^&*()-_+=~`[]{}|\:;"',.?/". Then, using the same formula i n this case, the number of different keys to try rises to 6823331935124. An extensive key search cracking is a very time consuming task. However, if we are using the right character set, password cracking becomes a relatively easy process. Figure 1 shows a dialogue that asks the user to either put in a character set which is predefined or put in a customized character set. The initial password can also be altered to begin a previous attack again. There is another option of ââ¬Å"key rateâ⬠that shows the number of keys that the attack attempts every second against all encrypted passwords that are loaded. ââ¬Å"Time leftâ⬠is the time remaining to complete the key space. "Current password" is the real key which is tested by the program. In the... The findings of this research will provide insight of Brute-force as one of the most powerful techniques to break plain authentications. TechTarget on the web defines brute-force technique as: ââ¬Å"Brute force (also known as brute force cracking) is a trial and error method used by application programs to decode encrypted data such as passwords or Data Encryption Standard (DES) keys, through exhaustive effort (using brute force) rather than employing intellectual strategies.â⬠A brute-force attack is the process of deciphering or decrypting an encrypted text by trying each possible key. The key length of the code and the attackerââ¬â¢s computational power is very important in every brute-force attack. The major shortcoming of brute force technique is that it requires too much time to try username and password combinations. Also, brute force attacks are very noisy meaning that they generate too much of traffic along with leaving some evidence of the attack. All the possible combinations of characters are tested against the encrypted passwords that are obtained in the brute-force dialog, in most of the tools that use brute force technique. We can understand this as a thief cracking a locked cupboard and trying different combinations of numbers. Social engineering technique is the oldest method of cracking a password and is done through simple, rogue manipulation of trusting persons. The need of the hour is to spread user awareness and train the employees so that they are able to protect their networks and critical passwords.

An analysis of the culture of an organization Essay - 1
An analysis of the culture of an organization - Essay Example 2- introduction of Apple Inc: Apple Inc. is one of the Americaââ¬â¢s leading multinational organizations. This company is the leading manufacturer of electronic products as well as softwares. Its key products are Macintosh computers and Apple iPods and iPhones. The Apple Inc. company was established in California in April 1976 with the name ââ¬Å"Apple Computersâ⬠. As the company expanded its product range to a variety of consumer electronic products, it dropped the word ââ¬Å"Computersâ⬠from its name. Now this company is having more than 35000 employees worldwide. In 2008 Apple Inc. did business of more than US$32. 48 billion. Therefore, fortune magazine has regarded Apple as the most admired company of 2008-2009. Apple Inc.ââ¬â¢s first ever product was an Apple 1, which was a handmade computer kit made by the co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak. It was not introduced publicly as it was not provided with a good graphical user interface. Steve Jobs, another co-found er, convinced Wozniak to introduce this product as a commercial computer. Therefore first ever computer named Apple 1 was sold in1976. After that it passed through a number of stages of modification and got the shape of todayââ¬â¢s Apple Computers which is entirely different from Apple 1. After the launch of Apple1 this company got fame and earned a good business. In mid 1980s Apple faced some critical time because of the launch of Apple Lisa which was flopped badly. Also Mac1 and Newton does not earn a good business and resulted in lowering the shares of the company. In 1985, Steve Jobs left Apple Inc. because of having clashes with the CEO of the company. He joined the company again after 14 years when the company was about to bankrupt and was facing many challenges. He came with the intention to save the company. After his return he introduced new organizational culture. Although the company was following the corporate culture but Steve Jobs applied few modifications to that c ulture in order to save the company. The company was facing a critical time due to a number of reasons caused by bad organizational structure. 3-Scheinââ¬â¢s Theoretical Model of Organizational Culture: Schein defined culture as an abstraction in which various forces that are generated as a result of some specific situations that are arising in the organization as a part of culture are much more powerful. If these forces are not interpreted initially then they badly affect the structure of the organization. He explained that the culture of an organization is adopted with the passage of time; it is not the matter of days. Therefore, it plays a very important role in the well being of its structure as well as working. Scheinââ¬â¢s theory of organizational culture is defined as (Schein, 2004): ââ¬Å"A pattern of shared basic assumptions that a group has learned as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems.â⬠Schein basically developed a model of organizational culture defined in three levels(Hatch, 1993). Cultural Artifacts: This level is more concerned with the physical behavior

Support of Slavery by the Christian Church Essay -- Slavery Essays
Support of Slavery by the Christian Church The belief in some higher presence, other than our own, has existed since man can recollect. Religion was established from this belief, and it can survive and flourish because of this belief. Christianity, one of several forms of religion that exist today, began sometime during the middle of the first century. Christians believe in a higher presence that they call "God." This belief in God is based on faith, not fact; faith is "unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence." (Webster's New World College Dictionary, 1996, p. 487). The belief in God exists primarily for two reasons: It answers the question of why we exist, and it is used to exert moral control over society (religion). The reasons for believing in God hold no true validity. Answering the question of man's existence is irrelevant; it simply cannot be answered. No one knows when life first began on Earth, nor in what form this life took. We simply exist; as far as we know, we always have existed, and we always will exist. (Wallace, 1994). The church claims God is the reason we exist, and this gives the church cause for exerting unnecessary moral control over society. All societies must have a set of rules, or laws, by which they are governed, to prevent anarchy. We must have some form of government, but our laws must come from the people up, not from God down. The government provides necessary control over society; morals should be left to the individual. The church has always failed to realize this. To suppress individuality is to suppress freedom, and never in our nation's short history was the power of the church and the suppression of freedom more evident than during the era of slavery. Health Is Wealth Essay
Health means state of being well in body or mind. Wealth means riches or being rich. So what is more important health or wealth? Clearly health is superior parameter over wealth. But how to be healthy. You have to eat healthy food. Where from these healthy food will come at this market condition. Straight way from money. Again we have reached on wealth. So we can see one is running cbehind other in a circular path. But only money is not important for being healthy. Peace and happiness is also attached for being healthy. So what does it means? The more wealth and more happiness cannot lead to good health. But sufficient wealth and sufficient happiness and peace can result healthiness. So the proverb is justified that ââ¬Å"health is wealthâ⬠. And wealth is not health but a parameter of health. Without money you cannot recover health. Try to earn some money for your health. So, do not spoil your health for earning more wealth. All of us are very much familiar with the proverb ââ¬Å"Health is Wealthâ⬠. But it is very unfortunate that we always remain attached very much to acquire wealth. Attached word is not justified, actually maximum of us are at a state of madness to achieve and satisfy our hunger of money. Health is not cared while dealing one`s target of becoming rich . It is only taken as a subject of life when one starts loosing health and enters into home of illness. Until this stage money was coming smartly and after becoming ill money starts to drain out . Net result becomes zero on monitory basis and negative on the scale of ââ¬Å"Health is Wealthâ⬠. That means there should be a balance of putting our life business. Health is above all priorities. Tips of keeping us healthy and wealthy- First of all we try to know what bigger diseases are; which affects us and finally damage our life.
